Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi has come out in strong support of Kenya’s growing partnership with the United Kingdom, amid rising scrutiny over the country's evolving foreign policy approach.

His comments follow increasing public discourse on Kenya’s international alliances, particularly after recent high-profile engagements with the United States and the European Union.

Despite the speculation, Mudavadi’s office reiterated that Kenya remains committed to a non-aligned, interest-driven foreign policy one that prioritizes diversified global engagement while firmly safeguarding national sovereignty.

Taking to his official X account on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, following high-level talks in London with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, Mudavadi reaffirmed Kenya’s dedication to building a modern and future-focused relationship with the UK. This comes as both countries move forward with the new Kenya UK Strategic Partnership 2025–2030.

The strategic framework is set to enhance cooperation in key areas including green growth, science and innovation, climate action, and regional security sectors Mudavadi identified as vital to Kenya’s development and broader global stability.

“As members of the Commonwealth, Kenya and the UK enjoy deep-rooted ties built on mutual respect and a rich history,” he noted.

His remarks come at a time when Kenya’s diplomatic posture is under heightened examination, with critics cautioning against overreliance on Western powers and urging a more balanced, multi-directional foreign policy.

In response, Mudavadi described the UK partnership as both realistic and forward-thinking.

“Our goal is tangible impact. This partnership is geared toward creating jobs, fostering innovation, and promoting sustainable development,” he said.

He also revealed that the deal positions Kenya as a regional innovation and finance hub. Notably, Lloyd’s of London is preparing to open offices in Nairobi, a move expected to boost the city’s standing in the region’s insurance sector, currently valued at about Ksh88 billion.

“This development will transform Nairobi into a gateway for East Africa’s insurance market,” he announced.

On trade, Mudavadi emphasized the UK’s significance as a major economically, with bilateral trade valued at Ksh218 billion. British companies continue to rank among Kenya’s top private sector employers.

He further disclosed that the new agreement will unlock Ksh177 billion for the UK economy, paving the way for export finance and job growth in areas such as Northampton and County Durham.

“British firms are vital to our economy, and this deal will inject fresh energy into both nations’ economic landscapes,” he added.

According to the Foreign Affairs CS, the partnership is built on shared values and a common vision, aiming for mutual gain not dependency.

“This is a collaborative venture anchored in shared ambition, promising immense benefits for both sides,” he said.

Mudavadi framed the agreement as a shift in Kenya UK ties from traditional bonds to a pragmatic, deliverables-focused relationship. Still, some stakeholders are urging enhanced parliamentary oversight to ensure such agreements fully align with Kenya’s national interest.

The Kenya UK Strategic Partnership is set to be officially launched later this year, with implementation scheduled to begin in early 2026.
